All about Me
Shady Oaks Cockatiels is located in Sebastian, Florida. We are a half hour south of Melbourne and a half hour north of Vero Beach. Our home is surrounded by four large Oaks trees. These trees help to shade the flight cages during the hot summer months. The three large walk-in flight cages overlook a beautiful canal. We have a variety of birds of all sizes who come to visit on a daily basis. Occasionally, Charlie the neighborhood alligator comes to visit too. While visiting with the cockatiels over coffee, it is not unusual to see a Blue Heron or Stork eating across the canal. All this movement does not seem to disrupt the cockatiel's morning chatter.
My love for cockatiels and exhibition began when a friend invited Diane and I to attend a Cockatiel Show in our area. It was love at first sight I had never seen such a variety of colors (mutations). We especially liked the White-faced cockatiels.
As a child I showed horses and then as an adult showed dogs. I was surprised when the judge turned to the exhibitors and encouraged people to ask questions. That sort of thing just did not happen at a dog show and showing in the ring with a professional handler standing right next to you was not an easy task.
I found the exhibitors to be very friendly and helpful. An exhibitor by the name of Judy Shapiro (a good friend) gave me her phone number as well as other breeders in the Florida area. And well the rest is history!
I was lucky enough to purchase some good foundation stock that would help me to become a successful exhibitor and breeder of quality show birds. During the American Cockatiel Society’s Specialty in 2012 to my surprise I was recognized as “BEST NOVICE” for the year 2011.

Mom watching me feed her baby!

Elizabeth was the first baby born at Shady Oaks Cockatiels. She was my first for everything. The first baby I ever fed, showed, won Best Novice at the Palm Bay Show in 2011 under Rick Solis and made it up on the top bench that day. She was such a sweetie. Although we did not have her in our lives very long she lives forever in our hearts.
